Topographic Surveys
A topographic survey maps the shape of the land and everything on it: elevations and contours, buildings, pavement, trees, utilities, and drainage features. It's the first step in almost any construction or site design project, because engineers and architects need accurate existing conditions to design from.
When you need one
Site and building design
Architects and engineers design from it.
Grading and drainage problems
See where water goes, and why.
Additions and new homes
Some permits require existing and proposed elevations.
What's included
- Spot elevations and contours
- Buildings, pavement, and other improvements
- Visible utilities, plus Digger's Hotline locates
- Trees, ditches, culverts, and drainage features
What you receive
- A signed topographic survey map
- CAD files ready for your designer
- Boundary lines too, if you add a boundary survey
Topographic survey vs. boundary survey
A boundary survey tells you where your property lines are. A topographic survey tells you what the ground looks like and what's on it. They answer different questions, and design projects usually need both. We often do them together in a single visit.
What affects the cost
- Site size and how much detail is needed
- Vegetation and terrain
- Utility research and locates
- Whether boundary work is included

Frequently asked questions
Does a topographic survey include my property lines?
Not unless you ask for it. Most design projects need both, and we can do them together.
What contour interval do I need?
Your designer will usually tell us. One-foot contours are common for site design.
Can you use a drone?
On larger open sites, yes. Drone mapping with ground control can be faster and show more detail. We'll recommend the right method for your site.
Need existing conditions for a design?
Send us the site and your designer's requirements.
